Zamboanga City - First day of the MASTS RSSG 2017, team BaSC is off to a hot start in their Men’s Basketball campaign after a 74-64 rout of Western Mindanao State University late in this afternoon. Even though familiar faces such as Jerome Ferrer was missing from the roster, the team still went off finishing its opponent due intense penetration as well as domination in the painted area by the big men. It was WMSU who won the opening tip, but then a series of turnovers from both sides occurred. BaSC draws first blood after a Wendell Mapula layup. Then, the crowd went electrified when the 6-foot-3 center Alsaud “Boga” Jamjam ripped off the rim with a tomahawk jam, thus letting his name to be known. The team continued to score inside and had a pretty lead but then No.11 Saavedra of WMSU connected early from beyond the arc, tallying 3 3-pointers, getting the lead by two, 17-15. The 1st quarter ended, 21-20, BaSC on the lead. During the next two quarters, team BaSC managed to have a good lead of the game, still by penetrating the inside crediting the guards and inside presence of the big men. The team showed an intense lockdown defense which includes 7 blocked shots to zero against WMSU and limiting them to only seven points at the end of the third. WMSU got their rhythm back during the last quarter falling behind by nine. 70-61, 1:39 seconds left in the clock. They also got by six, 70-64, 57.8 seconds remaining. Still it wasn’t enough as BaSC got away with a win by 10 through free throws sank by Ezequiel Orque. Momentum is on BaSC’s side as they face ZCSPC tomorrow at 9 in the morning. – A. Naiyf Amil
